How to speed up a slow iPhone or iPad

How To Speed Up An iPhone Or iPad Blog Post

Everyone has experienced a slow phone or tablet, and while it isn’t a major issue in the grand scheme of things, it is a large hindrance in modern day life.

Just because your piece of tech is running slow doesn’t mean it’s passed its sell by date, it just means that you have to take a few precautionary steps to stop the slowness and hopefully make your life a whole lot easier.

1.Close Unused Apps

Having lots of apps running at the same time will cause your phone to slow down and cause you to lose your mind. When you use an application and you close it to use a different application or just close your phone, these applications will be still running in the background.

To combat this on an iOS device you just double click the home button and then slide to shut down apps which you are not using and apps which do not need to be running in the background.

If you have an apps running in the background they will take up your memory and slow down your device. Hopefully clearing these will speed up and unclogged your device so it will run smoothly.

2.Delete Apps

While the access to great applications from the app store, people, including myself, go crazy downloading applications that they will never use which will clog up their device.

If you look through your device you will more than likely find apps which you have completely forgot about it and never use. These apps will be taking up your memory and also slowing down your device.

Apple make removing apps very simple, all you have to do is press the app icon you wish to delete for a few seconds until it starts to wobble, then from here, click the x on the top left corner of the app, this will delete the application. You can also go into setting, and go to general settings, then usage, then manage storage and you can delete any unused or unwanted applications from here.

3.Delete Large Files

Having your storage full can sometime cause your iPhone or iPad to be slow upon use. Your storage can become full with big files, mostly junk files, very quickly.

Normally, Files such as pictures, videos and music can take up your devices space and cause it to slow down. Songs you never listen to or photos you never look at can be easily deleted to free up space on your device.

Whether it be from WhatsApp groups with a large number of people in it or just your large music collection, large files clog up you phone very quickly,

Hopefully if you clear some of these files, your phone will clear up a bit and run better.

4. Restart or Reset

Restarting your device can also speed it up. When you restart your device all temporary processes which are made by iOS apps will be removed automatically and will hopefully quicken your machine.

You can restart your iOS device by holding the sleep/wake button and then sliding to power it off, then once its off, turn it back on again by pressing the sleep/wake button.

You can also force restart your device by holding both the home and the sleep/wake button for at least 10 seconds.

Another, more severe option, is to factory reset your device to the default setting. This is a powerful tool as it will clear everything on your phone and reset it to the settings it had when you bought it first brand new. This is a good option as you will basically get a new product with the factory setting. The drawback of this method is that you will lose all your data which is on the phone, so make sure you backup your data before using this option.

Because you will lose all your data a factory reset is your last port of call to quicken up your phone, but if you do want to do this reset you go into settings, then in to general settings and then reset setting and choose Erase all Content and Settings.

While this method is drastic it will hopefully make your device feel as good as new.

Safer Internet Day:Tips for Online Safety

Tips For Online Safety Blog Post

Safer Internet Day is upon us, and hopefully this event will promote and safer and more usable world wide web.

The internet is powerful and is one of the most useful tool in pretty much anyone’s life in this modern world, but the vastness of the web comes with its security issues.

Overall the net is a brilliant place full of enthusiastic people who are just using it for work or leisure, but unfortunately there is always people out there looking to use it for malicious means.

I have compiled together a few tips on how to remain secure online and hopefully not come to any harm when surfing the web.

1.Privacy

As I mentioned in my post last week, 5 Tips to Keep your kids safe online, Privacy on the internet is key to your own security.

On the majority of the social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook, you can choose who can see your content. This is vital in the protection of your online presence.

If you don’t set up the correct privacy settings for your social media account anyone will be able to view your content and do what they would like with it.

This small solution will hopefully put your mind at ease as only the people you want will see your content.

2.Passwords

Having a strong password is vital when it comes to online safety. Passwords while hard to remember are essential to keep your information safe.

As you can be seen from this article, the most used password on the internet is ‘password’. Having this as your password is a sure-fire way to get hacked.

It is important to have a strong password, which could not be easily guessed and contains both letters and numbers and possibly special characters such as ‘!’ or ‘?’.

Hackers could potentially use your information in combination with password cracking software to get your password. Because of this you should not include personal details that you have shared online such as date of birth.

A good password should hopefully keep your accounts secure.

3.Online Security

This software is very useful and prevents viruses and malware from attacking your computer while you are online.

BullGuard Online Security Uses a few different features to keep you safe while you surf the web.

4.Clickbait

In the current advertisement era of internet, clickbait is a major issue. Web site content creators will use any method possible to get users to their website by using clickbait. Impressive titles and interesting pictures may entice you to click on a link to a website or on an ad.

While this may seem like an innocent way of getting page views, people on the internet lie, and what you click on may not always end up being what you want, and the pages can contain malware or other security issues.

A good way to combat this is only clicking on links of sites that you know. Also just learning to notice a legitimate link can help you out.

Clickbait effects everyone daily but with applying some caution while clicking on these links, you will be able to avoid any security issues.

5.Scams

Scams have been around hundreds of years before the internet, but they have translated very well to the internet.

Scams on the web can come in many shapes and sizes. We have all received an email from a prince from a foreign land offering to give millions for no apparent reason.

Another scam usually showing as an ad on some lesser known websites will appear to offer you products for free, such as phones and tablets. These usually will lead to the user entering their account details or something to that effect.

These scams while sounding stupid cause a lot of people to give their bank account details and other details over to these scammers.

Preventing scams appearing is difficult as these people use multiple ways to get to you. Putting an scam emails you get into your email spam folder should hopefully prevent you from receiving the emails into your inbox in the future.

As with Clickbait, experience of dealing with scams will prevent you from getting into trouble. Usually on the internet, if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Tips For Online Safety Blog Post

Hopefully if you apply some of these techniques for internet security, your internet experience will be safe and enjoyable.

Millions of people have issues with internet security every day and hopefully after reading this article you won’t be one of them.

5 Tips to Keep your Kids Safe Online

Tips For Keeping KIds Safe Online Blog Post

With Safer Internet Day Approaching next week, 6/2/18, we are looking at how to keep your children safe online.

More and more children are gaining access to the internet, whether it be through school or at home, and the dangers of the internet are only increasing as the world becomes more tech friendly.

These few tips will hopefully prevent your children from being exposed to the dangers of the internet and hopefully will allow them to enjoy a kid friendly internet experience.

1.Safe Mode

Many services provide a safe mode for their product, which allow the user to specify the content which will be shown.

This is very useful as you can decide what your child will see when they use these products.

An example of this would be Google’s safe search. Google allows you to choose whether to see explicit content or not. Be aware that this is set to off by default, so if you want to turn on safe search for your child, go into settings below a google search and change the safe search option to on.

YouTube also has a safe mode which can be enabled to stop your kids from seeing any explicit videos. This is called restricted mode in YouTube. If you go to your account settings in YouTube you will see the option to turn on restricted mode.

This is just 2 examples of safe modes but most services will have a similar option to this if applicable, and will hopefully be a useful tool to keep your kids from watching or seeing the wrong thing.

2.Privacy Settings

If your child uses social media services such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc, you may not be aware that you can set the privacy setting on their posts and only allow certain people to view their posts.

For example, on Facebook you can change the privacy settings so that only the friends of your child will see the posts that they make.

This is very useful as otherwise anyone who has access to Facebook would have access to your child’s content.

This is not just useful for children but Privacy settings should be considered for anyone who has a social media account as it is somewhat dangerous to have a fully open account. As anyone could potentially go and view your profile.

3. Kid Safe Software

Another option to keep your child safe in the depths of the internet would be to use Kid Safe Software.

An example of this would be Zoodles. Zoodles is a kid Safe web browser which allows you to set time limits, block ads, block site and more useful features. This would hopefully be useful as the child would still be able to use the web and the safety of the software would ease any parents mind.

In google chrome you can set up a supervised profile for your child, which has safe mode turned on and will show you which sites that your child has visited.

Tips For Keeping KIds Safe Online Blog Post

4. Monitor and Time Limit Apps

Another option would be to monitor your child’s activity or limit their time surfing the web.

ScreenTime would be an example of an application which is useful for this purpose. This application allows you to monitor your children’s internet activity remotely and also allows you to put a time limit on how long they can spend on the phone, and locks it when the time limit is reached.

There are many applications that carry out this same service for limiting and protecting your child in their internet use, but these services can sometimes be very intrusive on your child’s web experience.

Hopefully though monitoring the use of the internet would potentially stop from any unwanted wandering into the wrong area on the web.

Tips For Keeping KIds Safe Online Blog Post

5.Lock in Apps

On Android and iOS there is an option to lock a specific application on. This is useful as if you want to allow a kid to play a specific game and not do anything else on the phone or tablet.

On android this is called Screen pinning. From the android security menu, you can enable this setting, and then you will choose a pin. Then when in an application you can then choose to lock the app and you/your child will not be able to unlock the application until a pin is provided.

iOS’s version of this is similar, it is called guided access and can be found in the accessibility menu in settings. In the application, if you click the home button three times you will be able to start guided access and then again a pin will get you out of the application.

While this is an effective method of protection it is very limiting to your child as they will only be able to use that one application.

Tips For Keeping KIds Safe Online Blog Post

Internet Safety is very important and when it comes to kids it is vital. If you follow some of these steps it will bring the level of danger down and hopefully their enjoyment level up.

Hopefully these few tips will help you to keep your little ones safe as they surf the web.

5 Tips on how to speed up your PC

Tips To Speed Up Your PC Blog Post

Everyone who’s ever had a PC has faced the issue of a slowing PC.This causes major frustration in todays busy world, and can cause a lot of trouble in our day to day lives.

These few simple tips will hopefully have your computer up and running as good as new again.

Being the go-to guy for all tech support in my family, I have found these few quick fixes to be vital to get anyone’s PC back to its full potential and maybe even more in some cases.

1. Disable Start-up Programs

A major issue with an older computer is the slow start-up time. You can wait for ages for your computer to start-up or you can get to work and sort out the Start-up programs.

Windows supply’s an option to define which programs you want to start when your computer boots up.

You can access this option menu by searching for “start-up programs” in the start menu.

From the Start-up menu you can enable and disable the programs which will run on start up.

Often you will find here that programs you have installed will be starting on start-up for no reason, and this may be causing your PC to run slow on boot up.

The only drawback here is that you may by mistake disable programs essential to the start-up so choose wisely.

2.Malware and Virus Scanning and removal

Malware and Viruses are one of the major causes of lapse in computer performance. Malware on your pc can come from many different sources such as email, downloads or corrupted files.

If your computer gets infected your computer is at risk for not only performance issues but also credit card theft as well as many other malicious activities.

A good way to keep the malware from your computer is to have a good antivirus software installed on your computer.

Tools such as our own Bullguard Antivirus are a very important to protect yourself from incoming malware and viruses.

3.Free up Hard Drive Space

Over time a lot of documents, photos, music, programs and whatever else you use your computer for can clog up your hard drive and in turn cause your computer to run slow.

Again, Microsoft provide you with a way of cleaning up your computer’s hard drive. To do this you search ‘Disk Clean-up’ in the start menu and you will be directed to an area where you can remove unneeded files. This is a great resource to free up space if you are running low or also to speed up a clogged system.

Another way of cleaning up space is to uninstalling unwanted programs, this can be done by searching ‘uninstall program’ in the start menu. From there you can uninstall programs which you no longer have use for.

4. Upgrade Hard Drives and RAM

If Clearing your hard drive doesn’t do the job then you may need to get a bigger or a quicker hard drive.

There are 2 types of Storage drives available, A Hard Drive and a Solid-State Drive.

A Hard Drive is slower but is less expensive so therefore you can usually buy a hard drive with a larger storage quantity for cheaper. A Hard Drive is older technology and contains a physical disk which is used to store the memory.

A Solid-State Drive is faster but in turn is more expensive so you will usually see SSD’s at around 256GB currently. This will of course change as they become more popular and the price goes down. The SSD is newer technology which doesn’t have a physical disk.

A SSD would be the perfect solution to speed up your computer, but sometimes can be expensive.

Upgrading your RAM is also a good solution. Going from 4GB RAM to 8GB or 16GB will see a large change in speed and performance.

If you are interested in Hard drives or Ram please contact GreenIT at [email protected] or call 1890 815 699.

5. Reset PC/Reinstall Windows

If all the above do not sort out your performance issues you may want to go all out and reset your pc completely. It’s easier than ever to get a new windows installation ever since the reset option was introduced in windows 8. Simply search ‘reset PC’ in the start menu and this tool will show up.

From here you have the option to reset your PC to factory setting with a new installation of windows. While this is a good option to clean your computer be careful and make sure you have your files backed up as the windows reinstall will wipe all your files unless you choose otherwise.

This method should really bring your computer back to its original performance unless there are some hardware issues.

CES 2018 : The Weird And Wacky

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

Once again thousands of people descended on Las Vegas for the worlds biggest tech show. The Annual event took place last week between 9-12 January. Massive companies showed up to display their new products and show us what the future of tech will be.

Samsung arrived with their new Wall TV, a new MicroLED 146″ TV that is so big they call it a wall.

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post
The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

Razer’s Project linda concept also was a very popular exhibit. This Laptop powered by a smartphone could possibly be the future of all personal computing.

These products will be the big sellers in the future, and many other big company brought their A-game to the show.

Some products though go beyond the norm.

Here are our 5 favourite outlandish gadgets that appeared at CES 2018:

1.AEE Selfy

In todays world where everyone is addicted to selfies this is the perfect product.

This Drone that doubles as a phone cover, detaches and fly up for the perfect selfie.

While being somewhat ridiculous, this product actually shows some potential and is a nice piece of future technology.

This is still a concept, but with over a million dollars raised through indie gogo this has the potential of taking off.

The starting price currently is $109 which is steep for a glorified phone cover, but if it was to become main stream this price would potentially drop.

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

2.Teslasuit VR

VR is the future of video games and technology, we have known this now for a few years.

The immersion of VR is significantly heightened by the Teslasuit.

The suit contains a feedback system to simulate injuries and reactions which are occurring in the VR experience. e.g. if you get shot in the game you get a shock in the suit.

It can also change to cold or hot to reproduce the VR environment.

The price of the suit has not been released yet but I assume it will be on the expensive side.

While this is an incredible piece of tech, I can’t help but feel it may not become commercially successful, not in this form anyway,

Having to put on a full body suit may not seem feasible to anyone wanting to experience VR.

3.CX-1 Self Driving Suit Case

For me, pulling a suit case around the airport isn’t a big deal, but ForwardX robotics believes we need self driving suit case, and who am I to say otherwise.

The CX-1 uses a combination of facial recognition, auto-follow capabilities and object avoidance to navigate through the airport by your side.

With a top speed of 7 mph this piece of luggage should be well able to keep up with the fast pace of a busy airport.

Again this is just a concept currently but could launch as early as this summer, but with the large quantity of tech on board I assume it will have a hefty price tag.

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

4.Evone Smart Shoes

This gadget, while ludacris, has some real potential use in the future of technology.

The Evone smart shoes can detect when a user falls over.

This would be very useful for elderly people who may fall and need help.

But these shoes from the future won’t come cheap if you want to buy a pair for your granny.

They start at around $150 and then a monthly service for the fall detection would potentially cost a further $20 a month.

So, for the time being, keep an eye out in case your grandparents take a tumble.

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

5.Somnox Robot Pillow

For me, this is one of the strangest gadgets on show at CES 2018.

The Somnox is a kidney shaped cushion which breathes.

The idea of the pillow is that it will match up with your breathing and help you fall asleep, but for me it sounds like something out of a nightmare.

The Somnox can also play white noise, lullabies and even play audio books to help you fall asleep,

And this nightmare pillow doesn’t come in cheap with a €499 price tag. This also has an indie gogo campaign which has raised over €200,000.

Maybe this will become popular in the future but I don’t think I will be a consumer.

The Weird And Wacky Blog Post

CES 2018 threw up some crazy new products, and it shows that people can still think very far outside the box when it comes to technology.

As far as I can see the future is bright but also very weird.
