What is Remanufactured? Understanding the Difference from Refurbished

The short answer: a refurbished laptop has been tested, repaired where needed and cleaned up. A remanufactured laptop has been stripped down to its components, rebuilt to the original manufacturer's specification, and certified to perform as well as or better than new. Remanufacturing goes considerably further, and costs a little more.

The rigorous process of remanufacturing
Remanufactured electronics go beyond repairs or cosmetic touch-ups. The device is disassembled to its core components, inspected, and rebuilt to meet or exceed the original manufacturer's specification. Worn parts are replaced, components are upgraded, and the finished unit goes through quality control testing before it ships.
Our remanufactured notebooks are produced in partnership with Circular Computing and carry the BSI Kitemark as equal to or better than new. Keys are repainted rather than reprinted, so lettering does not fade in service, and every screen is free of pressure marks.
Refurbished: a different approach
Refurbished laptops and PCs undergo a less extensive process. Faults found during testing are repaired, the unit is cleaned and graded cosmetically, and it is re-licensed and tested before sale. It will not receive the same level of component replacement as a remanufactured unit, and it costs less as a result.

Environmental impact
Both routes keep working hardware out of the waste stream. Manufacturing a new laptop accounts for the large majority of its lifetime carbon, so extending the life of an existing machine avoids far more emissions than running a new one efficiently ever recovers.
Remanufacturing goes furthest: it is certified carbon neutral, and it avoids the water and mining impact of new production. Anything with no remaining life is recycled through licensed channels under Ireland's WEEE regulations rather than landfilled.

Which should you buy?
- Buying a handful of machines for general use? Refurbished gives you the best value.
- Standardising a department or a whole organisation on one specification? Remanufactured, because every unit arrives identical.
- Reporting on ESG, or buying under a public sector framework? Remanufactured, because the carbon neutrality and the Kitemark are certified and documented.
