Windows Laptops vs. Chromebooks for Irish Students: Which is Best for School?

The short answer: for most Irish schools, a Chromebook is the better fit. They cost less, manage centrally through the Google Admin console, update themselves and last the school day on one charge. Choose Windows where students need specific desktop software, such as engineering, accounting or Adobe applications.

Why Chromebooks suit most classrooms
Irish schools mostly use devices for Google Workspace for Education, online classes and assignments. For that, a Chromebook does everything required and removes most of the admin burden.

When to choose Windows instead
Windows still wins where the coursework demands it. Senior cycle subjects using industry software, design and engineering applications, or anything that must run offline reliably, are better served by a Windows laptop. They also offer more powerful hardware for video editing and heavier work.
The trade-off is cost and management overhead: more support time, antivirus, and patching.

A note on dual operating systems
Some newer Chromebooks can run a Linux environment alongside Chrome OS, which widens what they can do. It is not standard across the range and needs configuration, so treat it as a bonus rather than a reason to choose one.
